Father Shea was the first male president at the college's then 60-year history and the first chief executive who was not a member of the Duluth Benedictine order. Father Shea thought the school needed higher enrollment from its male population so he decided to start intercollegiate athletics and began with a men's hockey program in 1972. In an address at the East High School Hockey Banquet, President Shea outlined the college's plans for varsity hockey in the fall of 1972. He predicted that the college would produce an All-American in four years. He insisted the purpose of the program was to invite students a total educational experience. Shea was right as the men's hockey program not only produced All-Americans by year four, but also won a NAIA National Championship. However, Shea left the college in 1974 and did not oversee the national championship. Shea was also credited in starting the all-school Christmas Party and Holiday Celebration at CSS. Shea passed away in 1977.
