Mankato, Minn. (csssaints.com) – On the opening day for St. Scholastica Softball, the Saints finished the day going 1-1. They faced a 5-2 loss in the first game against Dubuque University and had a shutout win against the University of Wisconsin-Stout 8-0.

CSS 2, Dubuque 5
The Saints started the game hitting first as the away team. In the top of the inning, Lauren Laviano's (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) single brought in Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) to score the first run of the game. In the bottom of the inning, Savannah Romero (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS (Bethel)) struck out two batters but two runs did score giving Dubuque a 2-1 lead.

In the second inning Maddison Blade (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) hit a double but the bats weren't able to come alive leaving Blade stranded on two. In the bottom of the second Dubuque went three up, three down after two strikeouts from Romero and a groundout to Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) at second.

CSS was still unable to string hits together in the third while Dubuque was able to bring two more across before a strikeout to end the inning. The fourth inning was a scoreless inning from both teams and carried into the fifth for the Saints.

In the bottom of the fifth with two runners on, St. Scholastica had a pitching change and brought in Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS). Only one run was scored that inning by Dubuque bringing the score to 5-1. The sixth was another scoreless inning, and with one more at bat left the Saints tried to pull something together in the top of the seventh. Dail had a double which was followed by an RBI single by Sam Paniagua.

Unfortunately, CSS couldn't keep that momentum going and ended the first game of the season with a 5-2 loss. At the plate for CSS there were six hits amongst the team, Hadlich had one hit by pitch and there was one stolen base by Bolin.

CSS 8, UW-Stout 0
The Saints started in the field as the home team and went three up, three down as Rosenthal opened things up with two strikeouts. In the bottom of the first both Laviano and Bolin were able to score, giving the Saints a 2-0 lead. In the top of the second, Stout had another scoreless inning.

In the bottom of the second, the sole run came from Dail's home run, the bottom of the third is when the Saints were able to add another three runs to their score.

St. Scholastica continued to chip away as they shut out Stout on defense and brought in runs every inning. In the end, the Saints were able to run rule Stout 8-0 in five innings.

Rosenthal had five strikeouts in the five inning game. At the plate, Dail went 2-2 with a home run, a single and hit by pitch. Laviano and Hadlich both went 2-3 at the plate for the Saints.
