MINNEAPOLIS (
csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica men's tennis team swept the University of Northwestern (Minn.) 9-0 Saturday afternoon at the Baseline Tennis Center to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament title.
Doubles
The No. 1 team of
Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 “Podil”) and
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) won 8-4, while the No. 2 pair of
Ernesto Telles (El Salvador/Academia Britanica Cuscatleca) and
Brendan Boudreau (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate) trumped 8-3. Telles and Boudreau have won 10 straight doubles matches.
Bryce Gadke (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) and
Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), the No. 3 team, edged out their opponents 9-7.
Singles
Tykhonenko won his eighth straight match at the No. 1 spot by scores of 6-1, 6-4. Those were the same scores for Telles at the No. 2 spot. Boudreau blanked his opponent at the No. 3 spot for the second consecutive match 6-0, 6-0. Boudreau has won 11 straight matches.
Engelstad won his 21st straight match by scores of 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. Gadke at No. 5 and Combs at No.6 both won by 6-1, 6-0 finals.
NCAA Tournament Fate
The Saints (20-1) will find out on Monday if their resume is good enough to claim a Pool B bid or an at-large bid. The NCAA Division III Tournament field will be posted on NCAA.com by 11 a.m. Monday.
