MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The St. Scholastica men's tennis team opened its 2026 spring season on a high note Saturday afternoon, earning a 5-2 victory at Wartburg College. With the non-conference win, the Saints improved to 1-1 overall on the season.
St. Scholastica seized early momentum in doubles play, sweeping all three flights to take an early advantage. The No. 1 duo of Mateo Torre Antezana (Cochabamba, Bolivia/Colegio Tiquipaya) and Eamon Gerrard-Stace (Brisbane, Australia/St Joseph's Nudgee College) set the tone with a 6-3 win, followed by a 6-2 performance from Finn Schulze and Dane Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), and a 6-2 decision from Andy Shaffer (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Drew Anderson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) in the No. 3 slot.
In singles competition the Saints continued to assert themselves. Torre Antezana captured the No. 1 match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, while Gerrard-Stace posted a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 2. St. Scholastica's Jose Naranjo and Timon Herrmann (Karlsruhe, Germany/European School of Strasbourg) also delivered key victories, with Naranjo taking his match in three sets and Herrmann winning in straight sets.
Wartburg responded with wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles flights, as Knights competitors Milan Lecic and John Gustafson each came out on top. But the Saints' balanced team effort—highlighted by strong doubles play and timely singles results—proved decisive in securing the road victory.
Up next, the Saints are into MIAC action with a matchup against St. Olaf on Saturday, February 14.
