Men's Tennis Secures Outright UMAC Title with Victory

NEW ULM, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's tennis team clinched the Upper Midwest Athletic Conferece (UMAC) regular season title outright on Friday with an 8-1 victory over Martin Luther College. 

Doubles Competition
The Saints swept across the board in the doubles against the Knights. Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 “Podil”) and Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) played in the No. 1 doubles spot for CSS and swept their opponent 8-0. Playing at No. 2 in the doubles contest was Ernesto Telles (El Salvador/Academia Britanica Cuscatleca) and Brendan Boudreau (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate), who won 8-1 in their match. In the No. 3 spot, Bryce Gadke (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) and Chad Hietala (Aurora, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) were victorious with a score of 8-5.

Singles Competition
CSS handled the singles play with ease as well. Playing in the No. 1 singles spot was Tykhonenko who swept his opponent 6-0, 6-0. Telles (No. 2) ended with the win with a score of 6-1, 6-1. Right behind him in the No. 3 spot was Boudreau who handled his Knight opponent with ease, winning with a score of 6-0, 6-1. Engelstad who recently earned the title of the winningest singles player in program history, won his 18th straight match at No. 4 by scores of 6-2, 6-1. Gadke played at No. 5, winning 6-1, 6-1. The only loss for CSS came in the No, 6 spot after going into a third set super-breaker

The Saints (17-1, 7-0 UMAC) finish out the regular season tomorrow when they travel to Mankato to take on Bethany Lutheran College at 2 p.m.
