ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated its conference rival, the University of Northwestern (Minn.), on Thursday 8-1 to clinch at least a share of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season title with its 11th straight victory.
Doubles Competition
The Saints went 3-0 in the doubles contest. Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 “Podil”) played in the No. 1 spot and won 8-2. Ernesto Telles (El Salvador/Academia Britanica Cuscatleca) and Brendan Boudreau (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate) defeated their Eagles opponent 8-1 in the No. 2 spot. And coming in for the third victory of the competition was Bryce Gadke (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) and Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), who won their match 9-8 (7-5).
Singles Competition
CSS did well for themselves at singles too, winning 5-of-6. Tykhonenko won by default in the No. 1 spot, followed by Telles at No. 2 who took the 6-2, 6-1 victory. Boudreau (No. 3) went 6-1, 6-1 to win his match, and Engelstad was just behind him to win 6-3, 6-2 for his 67th singles victory of his career - the most singles wins by any CSS men's tennis player in program history.
The final winner was Gadke at the No. 5 spot by scores of 6-0, 6-1.
