Men's Tennis Suffers First Setback of the Season

Notables
-Engelstad remains unbeaten in singles and doubles action
-Boudreau and Telles remain unbeaten in singles play

WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. (csssaints.com) – It was another tight match for the St. Scholastica men's tennis team on Saturday at the Lifetime Fitness, however, for the first time this season it did not go in the Saints' favor as Luther College (Iowa) remained unbeaten with a 5-4 victory.

Doubles
The Saints were only able to muster one doubles victory with the No. 1 team of Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 “Podil”) coming out on top 8-4. However, CSS trailed 2-1 going into singles play.

Singles
After the Saints fell behind 3-1 in the dual, Ernesto Telles (El Salvador/Academia Britanica Cuscatleca) prevailed in his match at the No. 2 spot 6-3, 7-5. Brendan Boudreau (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate) followed with a third set super-breaker win at No. 3 by scores of 7-5, 4-6, (10-2) to even the dual at 3-3.

St. Scholastica dropped the match at the No. 5 spot, but Engelstad evened the dual again with another third set super-breaker win at No. 4 by scores of 6-1, 3-6, (10-8).

Unfortunately, the Norse (5-0) took the deciding match at the No. 6 spot to win the dual 5-4 and hand the Saints their first loss of the season.

Up Next:
The Saints (5-1) will next be in action in hopefully sunny and warm Florida during spring break when it faces Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) and Lake Forest College (Ill.) on Sunday, March 12.
