ORLANDO, Fla. (
csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica men's tennis team prevailed in two close matches Tuesday as part of the team's Spring Break Trip.
CSS 5, Cornell (Iowa) 4
The Saints started the day with a 5-4 victory against Cornell College (Iowa).
St. Scholastica dropped two out of three doubles matches. The No. 1 team,
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and
Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 “Podil”), played an evenly matched game, but prevailed 8-6.
For singles, four out of six St. Scholastica players trumped their Cornell opponents. Tykhonenko came out on top again, winning 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 spot. No. 2
Ernesto Telles (El Salvador/Academia Britanica Cuscatleca) swept his second set for the 6-4, 6-0 win. These two wins were the final matches of the dual as the Saints trailed 4-1 at one point.
Engelstad (No. 3) conquered 6-2, 6-2. At No. 4,
Bryce Gadke (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) lost his first set 4-6, but came back and won the second 6-3 to force the match into a third set. Gadke won this third set super-breaker 10-6.
CSS 7, Dickinson 2
St. Scholastica ended the day with a 7-2 win against Dickinson College (Pa.) at the new USTA Center.
The Saints won two out of three doubles matches. At No. 1, Tykhonenko and Engelstad conquered their Red Devil opponents 8-2. Telles and
Brendan Boudreau (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate) won with a final score of 8-3 as the No. 2 team.
The Saints lost one of six singles matches. Tykhonenko (No.1) and Englestad (No. 4) each beat out their opponent 6-1, 6-2. In No. 2, Telles prevailed 6-2, 6-3. Boudreau, No. 3, triumphed by defeating his Dickinson opponent 6-2, 6-4. At No. 5, Gadke achieved the win with a score of 6-4, 6-1.
