csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team won two close matches on Sunday to begin its Spring Break Trip.
CSS 5, Saint Ambrose 4
The Saints opened their trip at the brand new USTA Training Center and defeated NAIA's Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) 5-4.
The Saints won two of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of
Ernesto Telles (El Salvador/Academia Britanica Cuscatleca) and
Brendan Boudreau (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate) won 8-2. The No. 2 tandem of
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and
Zach Meikle (La Salle, Manitoba/Linden Christian School) came out on top 8-4. The doubles win is Engelstad's 50
th of his career, becoming the eighth player in program history to reach that milestone. He is the fourth player to win at least 50 singles matches and 50 doubles matches in a career.
Engelstad then won at the No. 2 singles spot, blanking his opponent 6-0, 6-0.
Bryce Gadke (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) followed with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at the No. 3 spot.
Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) clinched the dual win for the Saints with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 spot.
CSS 5, Lake Forest 4
The Saints wrapped up the day with another 5-4 victory over Lake Forest College (Ill.).
CSS began the dual by dropping two of the three doubles matches. The lone winner was the No. 1 team of
Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 “Podil”) and Engelstad by a score of 8-5. They are now 4-0 on the year at the No. 1 spot.
The Saints needed to win four of the six singles matches to rally and win the dual. Gadke started things off with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot. Boudreau followed with a key super-breaker win at the No. 3 spot by scores of 6-4, 4-6, (10-7) to put the Saints up 3-2 in the dual. Boudreau is now 6-0 at the No. 3 spot
Tykhonenko kept it rolling with a straight sets victory at the No. 1 spot 6-4, 6-2. Engelstad followed with another win by scores of 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot to give the Saints the dual win. Engelstad improves to 8-0 in singles this season.

The Saints (7-1) are off on Monday and return to the court on Tuesday to face both Cornell College (Iowa) and Dickinson College (Pa.).
