Men's Tennis Wins Opener in Tight Match

FARGO, N.D. (csssaints.com) – In came down to the final match in Saturday's St. Scholastica men's tennis team's season opener at Concordia College-Moorhead and the Saints prevailed in a third set super-breaker to take the dual 5-4.
 
Doubles:
The Saints jumped out to a lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. The No. 3 team of Brendan Boudreau (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate) and Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) won 8-5 and the No. 1 team of Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 “Podil”) and Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) won 8-4.
 
Singles:
The Cobbers seized control by winning the first three singles matches to go up 4-2 and only needing one more win to take the dual.
 
Boudreau then won for the Saints at the No. 3 spot 6-0, 6-4. Engelstad hung on to win in straight sets at the No. 4 spot 6-1, 7-6 (7-1). That knotted up the dual at 4-4.
 
That meant it came down to the No. 2 singles spot and freshman Ernesto Telles (El Salvador/Academia Britanica Cuscatleca). Telles dropped the first set 7-5, but stayed alive to win the second set 6-2 to force a third set super-breaker. In the first player to 10 points tie breaker, Telles came through by a score of 10-3 to give the Saints the 5-4 victory.
 
Up Next:
The Saints will have their home and conference opener next Saturday when they face North Central University (Minn.) at 3 p.m. at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
