MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica men's tennis team bested the University of Northwestern 9-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center. This was its second sweep of the tournament, as CSS beat out Martin Luther College 9-0 in the semifinals Friday night.
Doubles:
The No. 1 doubles team, consisting of
Josh Stainer (Rowlands Castle, England/South Downs College) and
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS), defeated their Eagle opponents with a final score of 8-4. At No. 2 for the Saints,
Bryce Gadke (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) and
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) dropped only one game for a final score of 8-1.
In the No. 3 spot,
Jordan Lindholm (Mt. Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) struggled, but were able in the end to pull out the win 8-6.
Singles:
For the second match in a row, Engelstad (No. 3) did not drop a single game in his singles match, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
Stainer (No. 1) was successful, with final scores of 6-1, 6-1.
Makar Grytsevych (Lviv, Ukraine/Lviv Linguistic Gymnasium (King)) at No. 2 was also successful for the Saints, scoring 6-4, 6-2. Fontana (No. 4) was defeated in his first set 2-6, but came back to win his second set 6-4 and his tiebreaker 10-1.
At No. 5, Gadke was able to best his Northwestern opponent 6-2, 6-0. To close it out for the Saints at No. 6, Lindholm won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Thank You Seniors
The Saints (16-6) will graduate four seniors from this year's squad that has won four straight UMAC regular season and tournament titles. Those seniors are Fontana, Lindholm, Stainer and
Matt Tellander (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS). Stainer finishes his career as the winning Saint in program history with 116 singles and doubles wins in a career, all at the No. 1 flight. Fontana is the winningest singles player in program history with 66 victories. Tellander finished with a career singles mark of 26-1. Lindholm matched his win total in doubles this season (15), then he had in the first three years combined.
