ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated the University of Northwestern 6-3 Saturday afternoon to clinch the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season title outright.
Doubles:
The Saints won two out of three doubles matches, including the No. 1 team of
Josh Stainer (Rowlands Castle, England/South Downs College) and
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) who won their match 8-2. The No. 2 team of
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) and
Bryce Gadke (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) were victorious, winning 8-6.
Singles:
The Saints were also able to win four out of six matches to obtain the championship title. Stainer, (No. 1) defeated his Eagle opponent in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Not dropping a game, Engelstad at No. 3 triumphed 6-0, 6-0.
Fontana (No. 4), lost his first set 6-4, but then went on to win the second and the third set super-breaker, 6-4, 10-7. In the No. 6 spot,
Jordan Lindholm (Mt. Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) was successful, winning both sets 6-4, 6-4.
Up Next:
The UMAC Tournament begins on Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. The opponent for the Saints is yet to be determined.
