DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated Midland University (Neb.) 8-1 and Bethany Lutheran College 9-0 in consecutive matches on Saturday at the West Hills Tennis & Fitness Center in Owatonna.
CSS 8, Midland 1
In the singles competition, at No. 1, Josh Stainer (Rowlands Castle, England/South Downs College) came out on top 6-4, 6-0, and Makar Grytsevych (Lviv, Ukraine/Lviv Linguistic Gymnasium (King)), playing No. 2, also defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-2. Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) topped his opponent at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-0, while Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) got the win 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. Bryce Gadke (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) bested his No. 5 opponent as well, 6-1, 6-0.
St. Scholastica was successful in the doubles competition as well. The No. 1 doubles team for CSS, Stainer and Engelstad, dropped only a single game in their 8-1 victory over the Warriors. The No. 2 doubles team of Lindholm and Grytsevych allowed a much closer match but went home with a 9-7 win. Fontana and Gadke, at No. 3, also tallied a win, defeating Midland 8-2.

St. Scholastica had no trouble handling Bethany Lutheran in the second round of matches for the day. In the singles competition, Stainer (No. 1) won 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2, Grytsevych was victorious 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, and Engelstad in the No. 3 spot earned the W 6-1, 6-0. Fontana, playing No. 4, defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-1. Gadke (No. 5) and Lindholm (No. 6), won with identical scores of 6-1, 6-2.
The CSS doubles roster got the better of their opponents as well. Stainer and Engelstad, at No. 1, defeated their Bethany Lutheran opponents 8-2. In the No. 2 spot, Gadke and Fontana earned the 8-4 victory, and finally, playing No. 3, Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Grytsevych were victorious with a score of 8-2.
