ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team continued to dominate the UMAC with another 9-0 over University of Northwestern on Saturday afternoon to capture its 19th straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular season title.
No. 1 pair of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) took down their opponents 8-3, while No. 2 doubles duo
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) won 8-2. The closest the Eagles came to taking a point was against the No. 3 team of
Jordan Lindholm (Mt. Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) who pulled off a close 8-6 victory.
No. 1 in singles play was Stainer with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Mack pulled off a 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 2 spot and teammate Engelstad in No. 3 slot took down his opponent 6-0, 6-2. No. 4
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) beat Northwestern in singles with a score of 6-3, 6-2 and No. 5 singles player Bates won 6-1, 6-1.
Matt Tellander (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) finished things up in the No. 6 slot with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Stainer's victory in the singles this afternoon added to the record he broke yesterday with the most career wins in the No. 1 flight.
Overall the Saints are 15-9 and 9-0 in the UMAC. CSS will close out the regular season with a conference matchup against the University of Minnesota Morris tomorrow. CSS will take the courts at 2 p.m. in Duluth for the final time this season at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
