ORLANDO, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team opened its spring break Sunday with a 5-4 loss to Saint Ambrose University (Iowa), but responded with a 5-4 triumph over Illinois Wesleyan University in the nightcap.
Saint Ambrose 5, CSS 4 (Box Score) The Saints began the day with a close loss to NAIA's Saint Ambrose University.
The Fighting Bees took two of three doubles matches. The lone CSS team to win was the No. 1 duo of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) 8-4.
In singles action, Saint Ambrose extended its match lead to 4-1 after winning the first two matches.
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) (No. 2) then won 6-1, 6-0 and
Matt Tellander (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) (No. 5) won 6-1, 6-3 to make the match score 4-3.
The deciding match would be decided in a super-breaker as Saint Ambrose came out on top at No. 6 by scores of 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, (10-2).
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) (No. 1) would win the final match 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) to make the final match score 5-4. The Fighting Bees have won six straight matches.
CSS 5, Illinois Wesleyan 4 (Box Score) The Saints responded this evening by defeating Illinois Wesleyan University 5-4.
This time around, CSS would take two of the three doubles matches. The No. 2 duo of
Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Engelstad won 8-4. The No. 3 tandem of
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and Fontana won 8-2.
Mauston (No. 5) and Bates (No. 6) also picked up straight sets victories in singles action. Mauston on 6-1, 6-0 and Bates blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0. Engelstad clinched the victory for the Saints with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot.
The Saints (5-5) are in action again tomorrow when they square off against Monmouth College (Ill.) at 5 p.m. (ET).
