ORLANDO, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team went 1-1 on its final day in Florida with a loss to Berry College (Ga.) and a victory over Wittenberg University (Ohio) on Wednesday.
Berry 6, CSS 3 (Box Score) The Saints began the day with a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Vikings.
CSS was in good shape after doubles play as the No. 2 team of
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and
Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) won 8-2 and the No. 3 team of
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) won 8-5.
However, the Saints would only go 1-5 in singles play. The lone winner for CSS was Mauston (No. 5) by scores of 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
The Vikings improved to 5-0 with the victory.
CSS 7, Wittenberg 2 (Box Score) The Saints ended action in Florida with a 7-2 victory Wednesday evening.
Singles play began the dual match and CSS took four of the six matches. Engelstad (No. 2) won 6-2, 6-1. Mauston (No. 4) also won in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
Matt Tellander (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) (No. 6) blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0. The final singles winner was Fontana (No. 3) in a third set super-breaker 6-2, 3-6, (10-4).
St. Scholastica then swept all three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) won 8-3. The No. 2 duo of Engelstad and Mauston topped their opponents 8-6. The final winner was the No. 3 team of
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Jordan Lindholm (Mt. Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) by a score of 8-4.
The Saints (7-6) are back in action on Saturday, March 21 when they face Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter in the morning and North Central University in Minneapolis in the afternoon.
