Notables-Stainer wins doubles match in Duluth and singles match in Eau Claire-Combs and Grow win first collegiate singles matches
DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team split both of its matches on Friday, defeating Ripon College (Wis.), but falling to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
CSS 7, Ripon 2 (Box Score) The Saints began the day with a 7-2 victory over Ripon College at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
In doubles play, the No. 1 team of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) won by a score of 8-3. The No. 2 tandem of
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Dan Mauro (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius HS) won 8-1. That was the same victorious score for the No. 3 team of
Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and
Taylor Grow (Minnetonka, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest HS). Stainer, Mack and Bates would then head down to Eau Claire for the nightcap.
In singles action, Combs (No. 5) won 6-1, 6-0 and Grow (No. 6) blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0.
Jordan Lindholm (Mt. Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) (No. 2) came out on top 6-3, 6-2. The final winner was
Matt Tellander (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) (No. 3) by 6-1, 6-0 scores.
UW-Eau Claire 7, CSS 2 (Box Score) The Saints then traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and fell to the Blugolds 7-2 late Friday night.
The lone winners in the match was
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) at No. 1 singles in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 and
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) at No. 3 singles as he came from a set down to win in a super-breaker 2-6, 6-4, (10-7).
The Saints (4-3) will face the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Sunday at the Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville at 4 p.m.
