DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team opens its season this weekend with a home conference match on Saturday and then traveling on the road on Sunday.

The St. Scholastica men's tennis team is coming off a record-breaking season, setting program marks for team wins (22), fewest  team losses (3), team winning percentage (.880), singles winning percentage (.778), doubles winning percentage (.859) and doubles wins (67).
 
Who's Back: The Saints will be led by 2014 UMAC Player of the Year Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles … He led the team with 20 doubles victories and went 9-1 in his final 10 singles matches of the year … He finished with 13 consecutive doubles wins … His doubles partner James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) re-joins Stainer … Mack is a two-time All-UMAC performer … He recorded 11 singles wins, including winning his final six matches of the season … Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) finished second on the team with 16 singles wins last season and won his final 14 matches … Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) had 13 singles wins a season ago and won his final eight … Engelstad also had 10 doubles victories … Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) went 10-0 in doubles play in 2014 and Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) went a combined 13-1 in singles/doubles action.
 
Who's Gone: Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led the team with 18 singles wins and also recorded 16 doubles victories last season … Lambrecht tied for the third-most career singles wins in program history … Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) tied the program record for career doubles wins (54) and was 17-4 last season.
 
Newcomers: Just three freshmen made Head Coach Wells Patten's roster … Look for Michael Gobbel (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) to make an immediate impact … The native of Romania will look to step into Lambrecht's spot in the lineup … Another Combs is on the roster as Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) enters his first year as a Saint … Trace is the younger brother of Cullen and Tucker Combs … Minnetonka native Taylor Grow (Minnetonka, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest HS) is the final freshman on the roster.
 
Keep it Rolling: CSS ended the 2014 season with a program record 18 straight victories, including nine straight 9-0 wins (first-time ever). The Saints did not lose a doubles match in 14 straight dual matches.

Last Season: The Saints swept North Central 9-0 in both matches and have not an individual match against the Rams in all 13 meetings … CSS defeated Carleton 5-4, snapping a four-match losing streak to the Knights.

Carleton placed second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) last season with an 8-1 record … The Knights finished with an overall record of 14-9 before being eliminated by St. Olaf College in the MIAC Tournament semifinals … The Knights return a trio of All-MIAC performers from a season ago in Mauricio Gonzalez, Erik Johnson and Christian Nagy … Gonzalez was 12-8 in singles play, while Johnson and Nagy had 10 doubles wins apiece … Carleton was 88-48 in singles action and 35-34 in doubles action.
