AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The College of St. Scholastica baseball team fell to Wartburg College 9-4 on Saturday afternoon in Auburndale, Florida.
Jonathan Stoeckle (Fresno, CA/Clovis West HS) started on the mound for the Saints and worked two innings, striking out three batters. Wartburg scored two earned runs on two hits and four walks during his outing.
Jonah Johnson (New York Mills, Minn./New York Mills HS) followed with an inning of relief and recorded a strikeout. Garrett Green (Riverside, CA/Martin Luther King HS) worked two-thirds of an inning before Michael Zunker (Ashland, WI/Ashland HS) provided the Saints with their most effective stretch on the mound. Zunker threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits while striking out six batters.
Wartburg built an early lead, scoring eight runs in the first four innings to take an 8-1 advantage.
Andrew Beffel (Highlands Ranch, CO/Mountain Vista HS) led the Saints offensively with a home run and three RBIs. Markus Isaiah (Centralia, IL/Centralia HS) added two hits and an RBI, while Damian Tamayo Vera (Miami, FL./Felix Varela Senior HS) reached base three times via walk.
St. Scholastica mounted a late push in the eighth inning. Ben Schefers (Cologne, MN/Central HS) started the rally with a single and Tyler Mielcarek (Racine, WI/Case HS) followed with a walk. Beffel then connected on a three-run home run to left field to bring the Saints within 9-4, but the Knights held off the comeback attempt over the final innings.
The Saints will continue their spring break trip on Saturday, when they face the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh at Lake Myrtle Main Field in Auburndale. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET.
