AUBURNDALE, FL — The College of St. Scholastica baseball team dropped a narrow 3-2 decision to No. 19-ranked University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh on Saturday at Lake Myrtle Main during play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Logan Price (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon HS) delivered a strong start on the mound for the Saints, pitching five innings while allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out seven. The right-hander issued three walks but kept the Titans' lineup in check throughout his outing.
Payden Joyce (Parker, Co/Lutheran HS) followed with 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run while striking out two. Joyce also helped limit damage by inducing a key double play. Ethan Zimmerman (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) closed the game with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and one walk.
St. Scholastica matched Oshkosh with seven hits in the game but came up just short in the late innings.
Damian Tamayo Vera (Miami, FL./Felix Varela Senior HS) led the Saints offensively with two hits and a run scored. Luke Krull (Greenville, WI/Xavier HS) added a hit, a run, and a stolen base, while Finley Spicer (Aberdeen, N.C./Union Pines HS (Limestone University)) recorded a hit and an RBI. Owen Maslowski (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area HS) also drove in a run for St. Scholastica.
Oshkosh struck first with a pair of runs in the third inning, but the Saints responded to even the score. In the fourth, Tamayo Vera reached on an error, stole second, and later scored on Maslowski's RBI single. St. Scholastica tied the game in the fifth when Krull singled, stole second, and came home on Spicer's RBI base hit.
The Titans regained the lead in the eighth inning. After a hit-by-pitch and stolen base put a runner in scoring position, aggressive baserunning led to the go-ahead run when Logan Schill forced a throwing error that allowed him to score and make it 3-2.
St. Scholastica threatened in the final two innings but could not push across the equalizer. A fielder's choice ended a potential rally in the eighth, and a runner was caught stealing in the ninth.
With the loss, the Saints move to 3-3 on the season, while No. 19-ranked UW–Oshkosh improves to 2-1.
