ST. PAUL, Minn. — The College of St. Scholastica softball team opened MIAC play on Monday afternoon, falling in both games of a doubleheader at Macalester.
In game one, the Saints jumped out early but could not sustain the momentum in a 7–2 loss. St. Scholastica struck first in the opening inning, as Sami Ernst (Forest Lake, MN./Forest Lake HS) and Kaylei Greene (San Bernardino, CA/Summit HS) each singled to set the table before Katelyn Hackman (Oakdale, MN/Tartan HS) delivered a two-run double down the left field line to give the Saints a 2–1 lead.
Macalester responded quickly, tying the game in the second before taking control in the fourth with the help of a pair of unearned runs. The Scots added two more in the fifth and another in the sixth to pull away.
Hackman led the Saints with two RBIs, while Ernst and Greene each recorded two hits. Aleah Shogren (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji HS) went the distance in the circle, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits.
In game two, Macalester used a fast start and a big late inning to secure a 13–2 victory in six innings. The Scots scored four runs in the first inning and added on in each of the next three frames to build a 8–2 advantage.
The Saints showed some life in the third inning, capitalizing on patience at the plate. Ernst reached base and later scored, while Greene drove in a run with a single. Another run crossed on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 7–2, but that would be as close as St. Scholastica would get.
Macalester broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run, to close out the sweep.
Ernst again led the Saints offensively with two hits, while Greene added a hit and an RBI. Bailey Ellison (Chaska, MN/Chaska HS) started in the circle, with Aleah Shogren (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji HS) providing relief.
With the losses, St. Scholastica moves to 5–11 overall and 0–2 in MIAC play. The Saints are scheduled to host Saint Benedict in a conference doubleheader on Saturday.
