DAVENPORT, Fla. – The College of St. Scholastica baseball team picked up a 6-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday, using strong pitching and aggressive base running to secure the victory.
Ben Schefers (Cologne, MN/Central HS) started on the mound for the Saints and worked four innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out two and walking two. Ethan Zimmerman (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) followed with an effective outing in relief, tossing five scoreless innings to earn the win. Zimmerman allowed just one hit and struck out two without issuing a walk.
St. Scholastica generated offense throughout the game while consistently pressuring the Griffins on the bases. Markus Isaiah (Centralia, IL/Centralia HS) led the way with two hits and a run scored while stealing four bases. Luke Krull (Greenville, WI/Xavier HS) added a hit and a run while swiping three bases and being hit by two pitches. Finley Spicer (Aberdeen, N.C./Union Pines HS (Limestone University)) also contributed two stolen bases as the Saints continued to push the pace offensively.
The Saints opened the scoring in the first inning. Krull singled and later came home during a triple steal to give St. Scholastica an early lead.
St. Scholastica added to its advantage in the third inning when Isaiah stole home to make it 2-1.
The Saints extended the lead in the fourth. Tommy Crupi (Gilbert, AZ/San Tan Charter) and Tyler Mielcarek (Racine, WI/Case HS) drew walks before Caden Hall (West Union, WV/Gilmer County High School) loaded the bases with a single. Tyler Tiedeman (Las Vegas, NV/Faith Lutheran HS) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Crupi, and Mielcarek came home shortly after to push the lead further in favor of the Saints.
