Minneapolis, MN - The Saint Scholastica softball team traveled yesterday afternoon to compete against the Auggies of Augsburg University in a double header. Despite a promising first inning in the second game, the Auggies were able to overpower the Saints and claim victories in both games.
Game One: CSS 0, Augsburg University 11
The Saints began the day at a disadvantage, without being able to register a hit in the first two innings. The Auggies, however, earned their first run in the bottom of the first with a homer to center field to make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Auggies added to their tally once more for a 2-0 lead before freshman Rita Langford (Webster, MN/Richfield High School) got the first hit of the game for the Saints with a single to center field.
The Auggies went on a dominant run in the bottom of the third, earning a total of nine additional runs to make the score 11-0 early on, proving to be too much for the Saints.
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) singled to second in the top of the fourth inning, and Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) singled to left field in the fifth but it wasn't soon enough. The Auggies took the first victory with a confident 11-0 win.
Game Two: CSS 3, Augsburg University 11
Langford got the second game started on a much needed high note, scoring the first run of the game from a throwing error. Shortly after, Sami Ernst (Forest Lake, MN./Forest Lake HS) capitalized on a single to center field from Laviano, taking a 2-0 lead. On the next play, Laviano would go on to score a run herself, thanks to a single from Madi Glienke (West Fargo, N.D./West Fargo Sheyenne HS) to take a promising 3-0 lead in just the first inning.
After locking down the Auggies in the outfield, the Saints kept the score the same in the second inning after failing to get a hit. The Auggies, keen to comeback, took back a run with another homer to center field to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Following another unsuccessful inning for the Saints, the Auggies gained momentum, tallying an additional three runs to claim a 4-3 lead.
The Auggies struck again with another productive inning, adding six more to their score for a 10-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Despite a late double to right field by Glienke, the Auggies added one final run to their tally to claim a second victory with a score of 11-3.
Up Next - The Saints (4-16, 0-4) will search for a victory to get back on track with their next double header against the Ole's of St. Olaf College on Saturday, April 12. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. here at Kenwood Field in Duluth.
