Winona, MN - The Saints softball team traveled yesterday for a double header against the Cardinals of Saint Mary's University. The Saints ultimately lost both games to the Cardinals, and will look to bounce back in their next double header.
Game One: CSS 0, Saint Mary's University 6
The first game kicked off with neither team able to get a run in the first inning. The Cardinals registered their first run of the game in the top of the second after a throwing error, allowing the runner to steal home for a 1-0.
Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) got the first hit for the Saints in the bottom of the second with a single to left field, but nothing else came of it. After an unsuccessful third period by both sides, the Cardinals made it 2-0 by a lined out hit in the top of the fourth inning.
The Saints struggled to get on base as the Cardinals added four more runs with two hits in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 6-0.
Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) got one final hit for the Saints in the final inning but it was too late, as the Cardinals claimed a 6-0 victory over the Saints in game one.
Game Two: CSS 0, Saint Mary's University 11
The Cardinals started off game two with their first run of the game for an early 1-0 lead. Bolin responded with a single to left field, but the Saints could not capitalize.
In the top of the second inning, the opposition tallied an additional four runs, extending their lead to 5-0. They went on to score three more runs in the next inning to make it 8-0. Bolin replied yet again with a single, but met a similar fate.
After locking down the Cardinals in the outfield in the top of the fourth, the Saints looked to cut their lead. Katelyn Hack singled down left field to reach first, and advanced to second from a ground out from Laviano. However, that is all the further she would go as the Cardinals shut them down to maintain their dominant lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Cardinals tacked on an additional three runs to make the final score 11-0 to wrap up a tough day for the Saints.
Up Next - The Saints (4-14, 0-2) will look to bounce back in another away double header on Tuesday, April 8 to face the Auggies of Augsburg University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Minneapolis, MN.
