Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica men's tennis team hosted match two of today's tennis doubleheader against the Cardinals of Saint Mary's University. The men's match ended with an astonishing 9-0 win for the Saints, completing the sweep.
How it Happened
Doubles
Dane Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Jack Onkka (Thief River Falls, Minn./Thief River Falls HS), who competed at No. 2 doubles, secured their victory against the Cardinals, successfully fending off any offense tried by Saint Mary's. The duo of Patten and Onkka finished their match with a score of 8-0.
Eamon Gerrard-Stace (Brisbane, Au./St Joseph's Nudgee College) and Jonas Abeleda (Sydney, Australia/St Aloysius' College), along with Reece Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Alex Daigneault (Agua Dulce, Calif./Hart HS), claimed victories in doubles play. R. Patten and Daigneault, who were at No. 3 doubles, concluded their match, only conceding two points, with a score of 8-2. Gerrard-Stace and Ableleda also achieved a win, earning the Saints a sweep in doubles, with a score of 8-5.
Singles
Gerrard-Stace, at No. 3 singles, as well as D. Patten, at No. 2 singles both handled their matches well, only allowing two total points between the two of them. Both Gerrard-Stace and D. Patten finished their matches with scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
Abeleda and Jose Naranjo (Brisbane, Australia/Cavendish Road State HS) took up the No. 1 and 6 singles spots for the Saints. They too efficiently finished their matches, with Ableleda finishing with scores of 3-6 and 0-6 and Naranjo rounding out his match, scoring 6-1 and 6-2.
R. Patten and Harper Dircks (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins HS) finished their matches strong, allowing the Saints to finish the day without a loss. R. Patten, who competed at No. 5 singles, finished his singles match scoring 6-4 and 6-1. Dircks, at the No. 4 spot, finished with scores of 6-0 and 6-4.
What's Next
The Saints (7-6, 3-3 MIAC) will travel to Minneapolis, along with the women's tennis team, to participate in another MIAC face-off, this time against the Scots (7-5, 2-2 MIAC) on Sunday, April 13. The time of this match is yet to be determined; stay tuned for further updates.
