Minneapolis, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica men's tennis team travelled south to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete against the Scots of Macalester College. Today's MIAC Conference doubleheader ended with the Saints claiming the victory by a tight margin of 5-4.
How it Happened
Doubles
Jack Onkka (Thief River Falls, Minn./Thief River Falls HS) and Dane Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), who competed at No. 2 doubles, alongside Reece Patten (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Alex Daigneault (Agua Dulce, Calif./Hart HS), who competed at No. 3 doubles, achieved the two Saints' victories in the doubles competition. Onkka and D. Patten concluded their match with the largest margin of victory, finishing with a score of 8-5. R. Patten and Daigneault finished, scoring 8(7)-7(3) after a close match.
Jonas Abeleda (Sydney, Australia/St Aloysius' College) and Eamon Gerrard-Stace (Brisbane, Au./St Joseph's Nudgee College) kicked the Saints competition off at No. 1 doubles. They ended just shy of victory, finishing their match with a score of 5-8.
Singles
Gerrard-Stace, who appeared at No. 3 singles, achieved the first win for the Saints in the singles competition. He could not secure a victory after two sets but did so after three, scoring 7-5, 0-6, and 1-0.
Harper Dircks (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins HS) followed in quick succession with a victory of his own at No. 4 singles. Dircks also was brought to three sets but ended after scoring 3-6, 6-2, and 1-0.
Jose Naranjo (Brisbane, Australia/Cavendish Road State HS), who competed at No. 6 singles, was the final Saint of the day to achieve success in his match. Naranjo, along with all of his teammates, was forced into a third set but came out on top. Naranjo finished after scoring 6-4, 4-6, and 1-0.
Abeleda, who competed at No. 1 singles, was the final Saint to compete today and fell just short of success. He finished his singles match, scoring 6-3, 4-6, 0-1.
D. Patten and R. Patten competed at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Neither brother was successful in their efforts in the singles competition. D. Patten ended after scoring 6-4, 3-6, and 0-1, and R. Patten concluded his day, scoring 6-7, 6-2, and 0-1.
What's Next
The Saints (8-6, 4-3 MIAC) have their next matchup up in the air for the moment. They will either play a rescheduled match against Crown College, or take on Saint Benedict on Thursday, April 17.
