Saints Fall Short in Border Battle with Yellowjackets

Superior, WI - The Saints softball team competed in their next doubleheader today against the Yellowjackets of University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Saints put up a good fight, but fell short in the end.

Game One: CSS 0, University of Wisconsin-Superior 2

The Yellowjackets wasted no time in the bottom of the first inning, registering the first run of the game off a double to claim an early 1-0 lead.

It wasn't much longer until they struck again in the bottom of the third, scoring their second off a single for a 2-0 lead.

Late efforts from Madi Glienke (West Fargo, N.D./West Fargo Sheyenne HS), Samantha Paniagua (Corona, Calif./Centennial HS), and Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) weren't enough for the Saints, as they finished the first game in a narrow 2-0 defeat.

Game Two: CSS 1, University of Wisconsin-Superior 5

Aryn Blumenthal (Linwood, Minn./Forest Lake HS) got the Saints underway in the first inning with a single hit, followed by another by Paniagua in the top of the second.

A slower start for both teams led to the first runs in the game coming in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Yellowjackets went on to score five runs in the fifth inning, taking a 5-0 lead for a rather quick turnaround.

However, Victoria Nelson (Lake Elmo, Minn./Mahtomedi High School) didn't let up in the top of the sixth. She doubled to left field which sent Megan Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) home to score for the Saints, cutting their lead to 5-1.

Unfortunately for the Saints, the seventh inning came up too quickly, leaving the Saints short with a 5-1 loss against the Yellowjackets.

Up Next - The Saints (10-28, 6-14) will have their final games of the 2025 season against the Scots of Macalester College this Saturday, May 3. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in St. Paul, MN.
