Moorhead, MN - The Saint Scholastica baseball team took on the Cobbers of Concordia College (Minn.) yesterday, resulting in a split between the two games. After pulling off a swift 5-0 win in the first game, the Saints yielded the second game to the Cobbers after a late winner.
Game One: CSS 5, Concordia College 0
Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) kicked off game one in the top of the second, scoring a run off a single to shortstop from Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central CC)). Damian Tamayo Vera (Miami, FL./Felix Varela Senior HS) went on to score the second off an error by the first baseman, and Garlick made it 3-0 off a wild pitch.
The Saints struck again in the top of the fourth, with Tiemann scoring once again thanks to a single from Garlick, extending to a 4-0 lead.
The Saints' outfield put up a great performance as well, shutting down the Cobbers of any runs all game.
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) nailed down the final run for the Saints, scoring off a single from Finley Spicer (Aberdeen, N.C./Union Pines HS (Limestone University)) for a final score of 5-0.
Game Two: CSS 1, Concordia College 2
The second game started off slower, as both teams held their own, denying each other of any runs.
However, the Saints would strike first in the top of the fifth inning, as Tamayo Vera scored off a passed ball for a 1-0 lead over the Cobbers.
The Cobbers fought back but it wasn't until the bottom of the eighth, when their runner tied the game off a single hit for a score of 1-1.
In the end, the Cobbers had the final say. In the bottom of the ninth and final inning, the Cobbers scored the game winner off a sacrifice fly to right field, splitting the day with a 2-1 lead over the Saints.
Up Next - The Saints (14-15, 5-8) will play the Rams of North Central University on Tuesday, April 22 in their next home double header. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. here at Wade Stadium.
