Baseball Improves to Over .500 With Dominant Two-Game Sweep Over North Central University

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica baseball team completed an impressive two-game doubleheader sweep over the Rams from North Central University this afternoon at Wade Stadium. The Saints scored 10 runs early in game one, coming away with a 14-2 victory, and continued its success into game two, scoring 14 runs in the first two innings, to come away on top 14-2.

Game One: CSS: 14, NCU: 2

The Saints offense got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first inning, as Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), Finley Spicer (Aberdeen, N.C./Union Pines HS (Limestone University)), and Damian Tamayo Vera (Miami, FL./Felix Varela Senior HS) all recorded base hits, giving CSS an early 1-0 lead. With two on, Sam Shopbell (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS (Fayetteville CC)) drove in two more runs for St. Scholastica on a two-RBI double, expanding the Saints lead to 3-0 after one inning of play.

North Central got a run back to begin the second inning, scoring a run on a solo home run, as the Saints lead now sat at 3-1.

Brady Goebel (Albany, MN/Albany HS) and Oswald both reached base to lead off the bottom of the second inning, later followed by a two-out RBI single from Tamayo Vera that increased the Saints lead back to three runs. After Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central CC)) walked, Shopbell got some help from a Ram error, scoring two more CSS runs, making the score 6-1.

North Central added a run in the top of the third inning on a wild pitch, as the score now sat at 6-2 in favor of CSS.

Goebel, Oswald, and Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) all singled with one out in the bottom of the third inning to load the bases. Two runs would score on a base hit by Spicer, followed by another run scoring on a fielder's choice, bringing the score to 9-2.

Both teams' bats were held in check in the middle innings of game one. That changed in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)), Goebel, and Ethan Raye (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) all walked to load the bases for CSS. Tiemann then ripped a single up the middle, scoring Braun and Goebel, to expand the lead to 11-2. With two outs, Shopbell drove in two more runners on a single to left, giving CSS a 13-2 lead.

The Saints were able to retire the Rams quietly in the top of the seventh inning, as CSS took game one by a score of 14-2.

Game Two: CSS: 14, NCU: 2

The Saints once again got off to a fast start in the second game, as after Tiemann walked, Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) doubled to put two men in scoring position, followed by a two-RBI single from Spicer, giving CSS an early 2-0 lead.

After Spicer stole second and later Garlick would reach base and steal second to put runners on second and third, Shopbell doubled down the right field line to score two, expanding the CSS lead to 4-0. The Saints would score another run on a Ram error, and two more runners came across on Tiemann's two-RBI single, which was immediately followed by a sacrifice fly by Schelonka, making the score 8-0 after one inning of play.

CSS loaded the bases once again in the bottom of the second inning, as the first two runs of the inning came on a Nate Hammerback (Alexandria MN/Alexandria HS) RBI single and a Brady Goebel (Albany, MN/Albany HS) base hit, making the score 10-0. After Joe Udd (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) scored on a wild pitch, Tiemann tripled to drive in another run to make the score 12-0 in favor of CSS.

The Rams would score its first runs of the second game, scoring two runs in the top of the third to cut into the Saints lead.

Both pitching staffs were able to keep the bats silent, as down the stretch for CSS, after Garrett Green (Riverside, CA/Martin Luther King HS) pitched four solid innings, Logan Price (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon HS) and Nick Thums (Madison, WI/Madison West) kept the Saints in front, taking the second game of the doubleheader today by a score of 14-2.
