St. Paul, MN - The Saints softball team competed yesterday in a double header conference matchup against the Pipers of Hamline University. The Saints were able to pull off another split after securing a 4-2 win in game one.
Game One: CSS 4, Hamline University 2
After a slower first few innings, Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) kicked off the game by scoring a run thanks to a double to right center from sophomore Jadyn Lind (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) for a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
Shortly after, Victoria Nelson (Lake Elmo, Minn./Mahtomedi High School) singled through the left side, sending Lind home to increase the lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Pipers tied up the game 2-2 after hitting two consecutive singles to search for the comeback victory.
However, the Saints were determined to reclaim their lead. In the top of the sixth inning, Katelyn Hackman (Oakdale, MN/Tartan High School) singled to center field to send Samantha Paniagua (Corona, Calif./Centennial HS) home to take the 3-2 lead.
Hackman wrapped up the game by scoring herself, which was made possible by a single to right field from Nelson to secure a 4-2 victory.
Game Two: CSS 0, Hamline University 5
The Pipers started off game two in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs off a wild pitch and a single for an early 2-0 lead over the Saints.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Pipers added to the tally for a 3-0 lead. An effort from Hackman with a single to center field helped push the Saints to stay in the game, but wasn't quite enough.
Hamline took charge once again, and in the bottom of the fourth they extended their lead to 4-0 following an error. Then, the Pipers secured it once more in the fifth from a single to right field, ending the game with a 5-0 win over the Saints to split the double header.
Up Next - The Saints (7-19, 3-7) will take on the Wildcats of St. Katherine's University today at Kenwood field here in Duluth, MN. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
