Duluth, MN - The Saints softball team competed today against the Wildcats of St. Catherine's University in their next double header. They were able to come up big with a sweep against the Wildcats, building momentum for the rest of the season.
Game One: CSS 3, St. Catherine's University 1
The Wildcats started off the first game in the top of the second inning with a single to center field, sending a runner home to claim an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Saints stepped up to the plate. Emma Bolin (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium HS) recorded the first run for the Saints after Katelyn Hackman (Oakdale, MN/Tartan High School) sent a sacrifice fly to right field, equalizing the game 1-1.Â
The next play, Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) stole second which allowed Jadyn Lind (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) to score the second for the Saints on the throw, claiming a 2-1 lead.Â
Hackman would wrap up this game in the bottom of the fifth inning, advancing home on a fielder's choice after a ground out to the shortstop. The final score of the first game was 3-1 in favor of the Saints.Â
Game Two: CSS 3, St. Catherine's University 2
After a slow start to the second game, the Wildcats started on the front foot once again, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third following a single hit.
It wasn't until the top of the sixth inning when the Wildcats would strike again, scoring on the throw for a 2-0 lead.
The Saints needed something to sweep the Wildcats, and it came to them in the seventh and final inning.Â
Victoria Nelson (Lake Elmo, Minn./Mahtomedi High School) registered the first run for the Saints after Payton Lang (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) hit a sacrifice fly to right field, cutting the deficit to 2-1.Â
Shortly after, the Wildcats started to feel the pressure. Anna Potratz crossed home plate off a wild pitch, deadlocking the game 2-2.
With bases loaded, Lind walked, which allowed Sami Ernst (Forest Lake, MN./Forest Lake HS) to score the game winner for a final score of 3-2 in dramatic fashion.
Up Next - The Saints (9-19, 5-7) will be back in action on Saturday, April 19 for a double header against the Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in St. Peter, MN.
