St. Scholastica track and field crossed the boarder on Saturday afternoon to get back to competing after
winter break. Bemidji State, Lakehead University, University of Minnesota – Duluth, and host school
University of Wisconsin – Superior all had their first taste of action after the New Year.
Snatching her first collegiate victory, sophomore
Grace McCormick (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld HS) won the 3000m in a time of
10:48.56. Not only is this a massive personal best for McCormick, but the mark is the ninth fastest in
school history. This is McCormick's first entry to the Saint's all-time list.
Another vital member of the Saints record-breaking cross country team in the fall, sophomore captain
Regan DeWitt (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) placed second in the 1000m. DeWitt's runner-up result of 3:05.54 is the fastest time run
in the MIAC this year, as well as the fifth fastest time in school history.
Junior captain
Ella Engen (Clearbrook, Minn./Clearbrook-Gonvick HS) strung together a consistent series in the weight throw to come away with first
place honors. In a tight competition that saw the first three places finish within less than a foot, Engen's
throw of 14.07m (46-02.00ft) took home the gold. Fellow junior and name bearer
Ella Stritesky's (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS) top
throw of 13.90m (45-07.25ft) was good for third place.
Freshman standout
Shayna Wick () led the jumps with a third place showing in the long jump.
Junior sprinter
Kayla Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) finished fourth in the 400m dash with a time of 1:04.80.
Two Saints qualified for the finals in the 60m dash on Saturday. Junior captain
Ava Fink (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) placed sixth in
the finals in 8.33 seconds, while Wick finished right on her heels in seventh with a time of 8.41 seconds.
