WINONA, Minn. – The College of St. Scholastica baseball team traveled to Winona this afternoon to take on the Cardinals from Saint Mary's. The Cardinal pitching staff was able to silence the Saints bats in game one, coming away with a 2-0 victory. In game two, the Cardinals got out to an early start and were able to maintain its lead late, defeating CSS by a score of 7-3 and recording a sweep in today's doubleheader.
Game One: SMU: 2, CSS: 0
Cody Horon (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove HS (Northern State University)) and Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) were able to each record base hits in the top of the second, but CSS was unable to record any runs in the inning, as the score remained 0-0.
Both teams were holding their offenses in check, with Matt Forrest (Oakdale, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) on the mound for the Saints, nearly setting down the Cardinals in order in the second, third, and fourth innings.
After Forrest retired the Cardinals in order in the bottom of the fifth inning, Saint Mary's brought across the game's first two innings in the bottom of the sixth inning on two RBI singles, to take a late 2-0 lead over CSS.
The Saints picked up a base hit in the top of the seventh inning, but ultimately it would lead to no runs, as the Cardinals took game one by a score of 2-0.
Game Two: SMU: 7, CSS: 3
After Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) led off the top of the second inning with a walk and later stealing second base, Nathan Wickham (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn HS (Concordia-Neb.)) would drive him in with two outs in the inning, to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Saint Mary's responded in its half of the second inning, bringing two runs across to take a 2-1 lead over CSS after two innings of play.
Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) singled in the top of the third inning, but the Saints would strand him on base, as the score remained 2-1.
Saint Mary's drove in another run in the bottom of the third inning, extending its lead to 3-1.
Kyle Baker (Benson, Ariz./Benson HS (Central Lakes College)) would double with two outs in the top of the fourth inning, but would be thrown out trying to score on an Oswald single, as the Saints still trailed 3-1.
The Cardinals added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, bringing its lead to 5-1 heading into the back part of game two.
Saint Mary's brought across one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the score 6-1 after six innings.
After the Cardinals scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Saints were able to score two runs of its own in the top of the eighth inning, highlighted by base hits from Oswald, Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)), and Sam Shopbell (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS (Fayetteville CC)), to chip away at its deficit, trailing 7-3.
T.J. Martin (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) was able to shut down the Cardinals bats in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Saints went down in order in the top of the ninth inning, falling in game two by a score of 7-3.

The Saints (20-18, 7-13) will be back in action on Sunday, where they will conclude its regular season in a matchup against Bethany Lutheran College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
