DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica baseball team pulled off a doubleheader sweep of the Auggies from Augsburg this afternoon at Wade Stadium. The Saints rode a dominant pitching performance in game one, coming away with a 12-2 victory in the first game of the day. In game two, the Saints had a number of clutch situational base hits to squeak by with a 10-8 victory in the second game of the afternoon.
Game One: CSS 12, AUG: 2
The Auggies were able to grab an early run in the top of the first inning, scoring a run on a two-out RBI single to take an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Saints were able to score two runs on a 2-RBI single by Mason Argir (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes College)) that scored Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS). Two batters later, Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) singled to drive in Argir to extend CSS' lead to 3-1.
Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)) doubled with one out in the bottom of the third to put a man in scoring position for the Saints, followed by a two-run home run by Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) to push CSS in front 5-1.
The Saints added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Levi Stubbles (San Bruno, Calif./El Camino HS (Skyline College)) drove in Schemenauer, who tripled to open up the inning, giving CSS a 6-1 lead.
Grant Taival (Lake Elmo, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) continued his dominance on the mound through the fifth inning, retiring 12 Auggies batters in a row, as the Saints still held a sizable lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Stubbles tripled with one out in the inning to put a man in scoring position early in the inning. After Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) drove him in on an RBI single, Braun and Oswald were able to reach base, with Schelonka scoring on an error to make the score 8-2.
Tiemann drove in another run in the inning on an RBI single and Argir would drive in two more runners to extend the lead to 12-2.
Nico Gallegos (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) would come in to pitch the seventh inning, and did with ease, with the Saints coming away with a 12-2 victory in game one.
Game Two: CSS: 10, AUG: 8
Matt Juza (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS) was able to start off strong for CSS in the top of the first, picking up two strikeouts to set aside the Auggies offense.
In the bottom of the first, Schelonka and Braun put up a pair of singles for the Saints, with Cody Horon (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove HS (Northern State University)) also singling to load the bases. The Saints would score two runs in the inning, as Tiemann picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly, and Sam Shopbell (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS (Fayetteville CC)) doubled to drive in another run and give CSS a 2-0 lead.
Augsburg responded quickly in the top of the second, scoring two runs on three hits, tying the game at 2-2.
The Saints got a pair of base hits to begin the second inning, and it was Braun who delivered the hit that drove in both runs on a 2-RBI single, giving CSS the lead once again.
Augsburg tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on an extra-base hit.
Braun added another run to his RBI total for the day in the bottom of the fourth inning, singling to put CSS back in front by a run. Later in the inning, Tiemann singled to drive in Braun from second base, as the Saints held a 6-4 lead.
After Augsburg added a run in the top of the top of the fifth inning, Stubbles hit a towering two-run home run, with CSS leading 8-5.
The Auggies bats came to life in the top of the sixth inning, scoring three runs to tie the game at 8-8 on three hits in the inning.
With the score being tied 8-8 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, Stubbles lead off the inning with a triple, followed by an RBI double by Schelonka and Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) dropping a beautiful infield bunt single to put CSS in front 10-8 heading into the top of the ninth.
Wes Kemming (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) was given the tap for the save in the top of the ninth inning, and when the bases were loaded in a high stress situation, Kemming was able to get out of the jam and give CSS a 10-8 victory and a sweep of today's doubleheader.

The Saints (13-6, 3-3) will be back in action on Tuesday, where they will travel to St. Peter to take on the Oles from St. Olaf. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 P.M.
