DULUTH, Minn. – The College of St. Scholastica baseball team completed a two-game sweep this afternoon against the Scots from Macalester College. Game one was a nailbiter for most of the game, in which the Saints came away with a victory on a walk-off double. In game two, the Saints came alive offensively, as along with a dominant pitching performance, came away with a 15-1 win.
Game One: CSS: 12, MAC: 11
The Scots struck first in game one of the doubleheader, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single.
St. Scholastica not only tied the game, but took the lead after its half of the first inning. After Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central CC)) led off the inning with a single, Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) drove him in on an RBI triple, followed by a sacrifice fly by Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)), and after Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) singled, he would score in the inning later on a wild pitch, with CSS leading 3-1.
Jumping to the fourth inning, Macalester was able to bring across five runs on four hits and two CSS errors in the inning, to take a 6-3 lead over the Saints.
After Sam Shopbell (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS (Fayetteville CC)) singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth and Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes)) reached base via a walk, Garlick drove them both in on an RBI double to cut the deficit to just one run. Oswald would drive him in on an RBI single one batter later and Oswald would score on a wild pitch and a Scots throwing error.
Back-to-back singles for Braun and Schelonka in the inning, Levi Stubbles (San Bruno, Calif./El Camino HS (Skyline College)) would drive one in on an RBI double to put CSS in front 8-6. Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) would put the cherry on top in the inning with a two-RBI triple to put CSS up 10-6, and later he would score on a sacrifice fly to cap off the Saints' eight-run fourth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning however, the Scots were able to tie the game back at 11-11 with five runners coming across the plate as the Saints now had to earn its way to come away with the victory entering the late innings.
After Nico Gallegos (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) was able to strike out three Scots batters in the sixth and seventh innings, the Saints got a runner on to begin the bottom of the seventh inning. With no outs in the inning, Garlick smacked a ball into the right-center field gap which scored the game-winning run, Mason Boos (Duluth, Minn/Duluth Marshall HS), to give the Saints an eventful 12-11 victory in game one.
Game Two: CSS: 15, MAC: 1
After Garlick began game two with a leadoff single, he would score on an Oswald double to give the Saints an early lead. Oswald would then score one batter later on a Braun RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0. The Saints would grab two more runs, one on a Scots error, and the other coming on an RBI single by Finley Spicer (Aberdeen, N.C./Union Pines HS (Limestone University)), to put the Saints up 4-0.
Braun picked up another RBI in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single that scored Garlick, to bring the score to 5-0 in favor of CSS.
Grant Taival (Lake Elmo, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) held early momentum over Macalester, striking out four batters in the opening three innings on the mound.
After Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) tripled to begin the bottom of the fourth inning, Oswald added another RBI on a single and would score in the inning on a fielder's choice, putting CSS in front 7-0.
Macalester grabbed its first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single, as the Saints still held a 7-1 lead.
Garlick was able to drive in a run for the Saints in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single, and after Oswald and Braun reached base, Schelonka cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to put CSS in front 11-1.
The Saints grabbed two more runs on a Haapajoki two-RBI single, followed by another two-RBI single by Mason Argir (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes College)) to put CSS up 15-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning.
Taival picked up another strikeout in the top of the seventh inning, bringing his total to 11 in the game, as the Saints picked up a win in seven innings by a score of 15-1.

The Saints (19-11, 7-7) will be back in action tomorrow, where they will host UW-Superior for just one game at Wade Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 P.M.
