DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica baseball team split its doubleheader today against the Knights from Wartburg College, as the Saints also celebrated Senior Day as well. The Saints trailed early in game one, and despite a late attempt at a comeback, fell by a score of 6-3. In game two, CSS was backed by a big six-run inning to ride an 8-1 victory over the Knights in the second game, splitting today's doubleheader.
Game One: HAR: 6, CSS: 1
Wartburg picked up the first runs of the first game in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI single to take a 2-0 lead over the Saints.
Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)) both reached base to lead off the bottom of the first inning for CSS, but the Saints could not muster together a run, trailing 2-0 after one inning.
Matt Juza (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS) came in relief for the Saints in the top of the second inning and delivered a clean inning to have the score remain at 2-0.
The Knights tagged on one more run in the top of the third inning, extending its lead to 3-0 over the Saints.
Cody Horon (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove HS (Northern State University)), Sam Shopbell (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS (Fayetteville CC)), and Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes)) all got on for the Saints with no outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and a fielder's choice from Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) gave him an RBI and cut the deficit to 3-1.
Wartburg took back the run the Saints got in the bottom of the fourth with a one-run fifth inning to reclaim a three-run lead.
The Saints were unable to put together any more runs throughout the back-half of the game, while the Knights added on two more runs and claimed today's first game of the doubleheader by a score of 6-1.
Game Two: CSS: 8, HAR: 1
Matt Forrest (Oakdale, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) picked up two strikeouts in the first two innings of the second game to keep the score put at 0-0.
Jack Harris (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (Skyline CC)) and Shopbell both got on base via a hit-by-pitch to begin the bottom of the second inning. After Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central CC)) drew a walk, Harris would score in the inning on a wild pitch to give CSS a 1-0 lead after two innings of play.
Shopbell hit a solo home run to begin the bottom of the fourth inning, which was followed up by a Levi Stubbles (San Bruno, Calif./El Camino HS (Skyline College)) triple a batter later to put another runner in scoring position to begin the inning. Garlick would pick up an RBI on a Knights error one batter later to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.
CSS wasn't done in the inning however, as Nathan Wickham (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn HS (Concordia-Neb.)) would drive in another run on an RBI single, and later Oswald, Harris and Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) would also drive in runners on RBI singles, with the Saints leading 7-0.
The Knights would pick up its first run of the second game in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single,as the Saints still held a 7-1 lead.
After Garlick singled with two outs and stole second, Kyle Baker (Benson, Ariz./Benson HS (Central Lakes College)) was able to bring him in on an RBI double, extending the Saints' lead to 8-1.
With the Saints up seven heading into the top of the ninth inning, Jacob Worley (Ocoee, Fla./Legacy Charter HS (Crown College)) came in for the Saints and was able to pick up two strikeouts, as the Saints took game two by a score of 8-1, splitting the doubleheader on the day.

The Saints (17-11, 5-7) will be back in action on Tuesday, where they will host Macalester College at Wade Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30.
