DAVENPORT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica baseball team completed a two-game sweep over Curry College (MA) this afternoon to advance to 8-1 on the young season. The Saints rode a strong pitching staff across both games, holding the Colonels to just three runs across both games, winning game one by a score of 10-1, and game two 7-2.
Game One: CSS: 10, Curry College: 1
Payton Jeffries (Vancouver, Wash./Union HS (Shasta College)) got the start for the Saints in game one, and he began his afternoon striking out a Colonel batter in the bottom of the first, with the game tied at 0-0.
After the Saints got a baserunner on a fielder's error, Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) hit his fourth home run of the season, giving CSS a 2-0 lead early in the second inning. Just a few batters later, Cody Horon (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove HS (Northern State University)) drove in another CSS run to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Saints weren't done just yet in the inning, as Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes)) drove in Sam Shopbell (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS (Fayetteville CC)) and Levi Stubbles (San Bruno, Calif./El Camino HS (Skyline College)), putting CSS firmly in front heading into the bottom of the second inning.
Jeffries was able to strike out two more batters in the bottom of the third inning, maintaining CSS' lead.
St. Scholastica got an early start to the inning when Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)) singled, and he would later be driven in on a sacrifice fly from Shopbell, adding another run to bring the lead to 6-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, after CSS got two baserunners on early, Schelonka hit his second home run of the game with another two-run home run to put CSS in front 8-0.
Curry College added its first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI double, but Jeffries was still going strong looking to finish his outing in the seventh inning.
After Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) and Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) both got base hits to open the top of the seventh inning, Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) was able to bring another run in on a sacrifice fly, and Schemenauer would later score in the inning on a passed ball, as CSS was able to hold on to a 10-1 victory over the Colonels in game one this afternoon.
Game Two: CSS: 7, Curry College: 2
Novak led off for the Saints in the bottom of the first inning with a double, and would score just a batter later on a Colonels error. The Saints were able to score another run on a wild pitch, taking a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
CSS got another run across in the bottom of the second inning, with Haapajoki driving in Shopbell on a sacrifice fly, adding to CSS' early lead.
Curry College was able to bring across a run in the top of the third inning to cut its deficit to 3-1.
Novak reached base on a walk to open the Saints half of the third inning, and a batter later Schelonka was able to drive him in on an RBI triple. Braun followed up moments later by driving in Schelonka on an RBI single, putting CSS in front by a score of 5-1.
After Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central CC)) singled later in the inning, Shopbell drove in Braun on an RBI single, followed by an RBI double from Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) that scored Garlick and put CSS in front 7-1.
After Taival pitched five strong innings for the Saints, Ethan Zimmerman (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and Wes Kemming (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) came up big down the stretch, as CSS was able to hold on and come away with a two-game sweep over Curry College, winning game two by a score of 7-2.

The Saints (8-1, 0-0) will hit the field again tomorrow, where they will take on Principia College as they come down the home stretch of the Russmatt Invitational. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 P.M. EST
