DAVENPORT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica baseball team picked up its sixth victory of the season with a win today over SUNY Canton. CSS scored 14 unanswered runs through 4 ½ innings, as the Saints were able to take today's game by a final score of 21-4 after seven innings.
How it Happened
Levi Stubbles (San Bruno, Calif./El Camino HS (Skyline College)) drew first blood in today's game in the bottom of the second, homering to take a 1-0 over the Kangaroos.
T.J. Martin (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) was able to retire the Kangaroos in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the second inning to bring CSS back to the plate.
The Saints got early base runners in the top of the third inning, with Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes)) singling and Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) drawing a walk. Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) stepped into the batter's box and drove in both runners on a three-run home run to extend the Saints' lead to 4-0.
Later in the inning, Cody Horon (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove HS (Northern State University)) drove in Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)) for the final run of the inning on an RBI double, as the Saints took a 5-0 lead after 3 ½ innings.
Novak received another RBI after drawing a walk with the bases loaded to get the first run of the inning for CSS. Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) gave CSS an extra boost with a grand slam to break the game open, with CSS leading 10-0 over SUNY Canton. However, it wouldn't be the last grand slam of the inning for the Saints.
After Braun, Stubbles, and Horon all singled, the bases were juiced yet again, and the end result was very familiar for CSS, with Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) hitting a grand slam to give CSS a 14-0 lead.
The Kangaroos were able to get its first run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Saints still held a commanding lead.
St. Scholastica recorded two base hits early in the top of the fifth inning, with Sam Shopbell (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS (Fayetteville CC)) driving in a run on an RBI single to snag the first run of the inning. The Saints would get two more runs in the inning, with Eli Oliver (East Montpelier, Vt./U-32 HS (Keene State College)) recording an RBI on a bases loaded walk, and Novak driving in a run on a sacrifice fly, giving CSS a 17-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Saints added yet another run to its total, with Nathan Wickham (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn HS (Concordia-Neb.)) driving in Finley Spicer (Aberdeen, N.C./Union Pines HS (Limestone University)), who singled to open the inning, extending the lead to 18-1.
After the Kangaroos recorded three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Saints offense went to work to begin the seventh inning. It began with an RBI triple from Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central CC)) that drove in Oliver, which would be followed by an RBI single from Spicer to bring in Garlick. Before the inning was over, Shopbell drove in Spicer on an RBI single to give CSS a 21-4 lead over the Kangaroos.
SUNY Canton recorded a base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it would not amount to anything, as the Saints walked away with a 21-4 final score over the Kangaroos this afternoon.
