How It Happened
Just five minutes into the period,
Hunter Hanson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) scored in his second consecutive game, and teammates
Sam Olson (Duluth, Minn./Cloquet HS) and
Nick Lanigan (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) secured the assists on the goal. A few minutes later,
Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS) would get the Saints another goal, his 14th of the season.
Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya) and Issac Suppin would be credited for the assists.
The Saints were up 2-0 early but weren't counting the Cardnials out of the game just yet, as they saw four unanswered goals on Friday. The Saints would be able to capitalize on their power-play in the middle of the first but were successful in killing both of the Cardnials' extra skaters on their power-play attempts in the first period.
Eight minutes into the second, a holding call on St. Scholastica would allow the home team to get back on their third power play on the evening. This time, the Cardnials would be able to strike with a goal of their own, making the score 2-1. The Saints would have 10 shots on goal while the Cardinals managed eight in the second period.
A few minutes into the final period, the Saints were looking to put this game away, they fired five shots in a row, one from Suppin, two from
Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS), and two of Richel's shots were all saved by the Cardinal netminder. At the 12:59 mark,
Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) put one behind the net for his ninth goal of the season. Richels would achieve another point as he got the assist.
With minutes winding down, St. Mary's would pull their goalie and look for some answers,
Jack Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS) would record a blocked shot and
Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS) would make a key save. With the net empty, Hanson added to his already impressive weekend, with an empty net goal,
