DULUTH, Minn. — The St. Scholastica men's hockey team faced the Golden Gusties in their 2025-26 season finale on Saturday evening. In a game that featured sixteen penalties and four power-play goals, the Saints capitalized late and held on defensively to secure the 4-3 victory on Senior Night.
The first period ended with the Saints trailing 1-0, but they found the equalizer in the second period when Daniel Kroon (Calgary, Canada/) scored on a Saints' power-play, assisted by Hunter Hanson (Blaine, MN/Blaine HS) and Gavin Gunderson (Roseau, MN/Roseau HS), sending the game into the final frame tied at 1-1.
The third period featured five combined goals, the first coming from Hanson at 5:03, assisted by Matt Haun (Rochester, MN/Century HS). Less than a minute later, Gunderson netted another for St. Scholastica, assisted by Matej Palfy (Kosice, Slovakia/Gymnasium Trebisovska) and Jared Scott (Kenosha, WI/Christian Life School), extending the Saints' lead to 3-1.
Gustavus responded with two power-play goals to tie the contest at 3-3 with just under 10 minutes remaining. Shortly after, the Saints regained the lead on a power-play goal of their own, scored by Wyatt Wurst (Edina, MN/Edina HS), with assists from Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, SK, Canada/St. Joseph HS) and Kroon. The Saints' defense held strong in the final minutes, including a crucial penalty kill, to secure the 4-3 win.
Brenden Stroble (Livonia, MI/Adlai E. Stevenson HS) recorded 26 saves in net for the Saints, while Palfy led the team with three blocked shots.
The Saints conclude their 2025-26 season with an overall record of 6-18-1, and a conference record of 3-12-1.
They will say goodbye to seniors Declan Young (Fergus Falls, MN/Kennedy Secondary School), Matej Palfy (Kosice, Slovakia/Gymnasium Trebisovska), Hunter Hanson (Blaine, MN/Blaine HS), and Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, SK, Canada/St. Joseph HS).
