DULUTH, Minn. – On a day celebrating the seniors on the St. Scholastica men's basketball team, the Saints came away with a nine-point victory over the Oles from St. Olaf. The Saints held a two-point lead after one half, and although the Oles attempted a comeback, the Saints were able to hold on and capture a 71-62 victory.
How it Happened
The Saints got off to a hot start when Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) hit a three-pointer and Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) got a pair of jumpers to fall, as the Saints led early 7-1.
After the Oles tied the game at 9-9, Matho Ojullu (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS (Dakota County Technical College)) scored on a slam dunk, followed by a three-pointer by Andre Crockett Jr. (Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS (Rochester Community College)), as the Saints took a 12-11 lead.
Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) scored his basket of the night on a three-pointer, tying the game at 15-15.
Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) helped get CSS back into the game after the Oles took a brief lead, scoring a pair of jumpers to make the score 22-19 in favor of St. Olaf.
Moments later, Moore got a three-pointer to fall, as Winesett was able to tie the game 24-24 with a layup.
To close out the half, the Saints got a trio of layups from Crockett Jr., Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS), and Winesett to give CSS a 32-30 lead at halftime.
CSS kicked off the second half with a dunk from Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) and a layup from Thomas, as the Oles held a 38-36 lead.
Both teams went back-and-forth, with Crockett Jr. and Winesett getting baskets to keep the score tied at 40-40.
The Saints next four field goals all came from layups, with Thomson, Moore, and Keykal all scoring inside the paint, taking a four-point lead in the process.
CSS was able to take a big lead with baskets from Jacquez Overstreet (Appleton, Wis./Oshkosh West (Marian University)), Thomas, and Nelson, expanding its lead to 12 with just about eight minutes to play.
Later in the half, Winesett and Raymond both scored once again from inside the paint, and down the stretch, the Saints were able to ice the game from the free throw line, taking today's game by a score of 71-62.

The Saints (3-20, 2-15) will be back in action on Wednesday, where they will host the Pipers from Hamline at the Reif Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
