Duluth, MN. – The St. Scholastica Men's hockey team took on the Yellowjackets from UW-Superior this evening in the Bridge Battle. Both teams traded blows with both teams scoring a goal in the second period. The Yellowjackets would be able to score a goal late in the third period, as the Saints were unable to respond and came up short in tonight's game by a score of 2-1.
How it Happened
1st Period
Eino Rissanen (Sonvillier, Switzerland/Lycée Blaise-Cendrars) opened the period with a pair of saves to get off to a hot start in the net.
Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, SK, Canada/St. Joseph HS) began the offense for the Saints getting the first shots on goal, but was denied as the game remained scoreless.
At the 7:14 mark in the period,
Nick Lanigan (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Evan Pahos (Parker, CO) both tried to get the Saints on the board, but a strong defensive stand from the Yellowjackets kept the Saints scoreless.
Rissanen would record a trio of saves just past the halfway mark in the period, as the Yellowjackets were turned away once again.
After a brief powerplay for the Saints, a minor penalty was handed to the Saints, as the Saints' penalty kill would go to work for the first time.
Rissanen would be put to the test once again on the penalty kill, recording four saves before the Saints would kill off the penalty and keep the game scoreless.
The Saints were handed another minor penalty with just under two minutes to play in the period and they would be able to end the period strong, not allowing a goal with the game deadlocked at 0-0 at the first intermission.
2nd Period
The Saints began the second period firing shots at the net, with Issac Suppin,
Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS), and
Wyatt Wurst (Edina, MN) all getting good looks, but they were turned away by UWS.
Rissanen would make two more saves at the 6:00 minute mark in the period to keep the Yellowjackets off the board.
CSS went on the powerplay at the 8:19 mark in the period, and after a pair of shots on goal, the Saints would break the scoreless tie with a goal coming from
Braden Panzer (Grand Forks, ND) and assists from
Kieran Chung (Nottingham, Great Britain) and Pahos to give the Saints their first lead of the night.
The Saints looked to continue their pressure with shots from
Alessio Raso (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC, Canada/The Lawrenceville School) and
Emmett Wurst (Edina, Minn./Edina HS), but the Yellowjackets were able to contain the Saints' offensive attack.
UWS went on the powerplay at the 15:27 mark in the period, and despite not scoring on the powerplay, the Yellowjackets scored just seconds after at the 17:33 mark to tie the game at 1-1.
St. Scholastica was called for another minor penalty with less than two minutes to play in the period, but the Saints were able to set aside the Yellowjackets to end the period with the game tied at 1-1.
3rd Period
CSS killed off the final seconds of the Yellowjackets powerplay to begin the period and the Saints quickly went to work, recording a couple of shots on goal before the Saints went on the powerplay.
Nick Lanigan (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Hunter Hanson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) would get early shots on goal on the powerplay, but the Saints were unable to find the back of the net.
After the powerplay, Raseo would get a trio of shots on goal, all of which would be set aside with the score still at 1-1.
Strong defensive showings a few minutes past the halfway point would pin both teams still stuck at 1-1.
Shewchuk and
Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) fired shots on the net at the 14:12 point of the period but were denied.
UWS went on the attack in the closing minutes of the period, and with just over a minute to play, the Yellowjackets scored the decisive goal, coming away with a 2-1 victory over CSS in dramatic fashion.

Braden Panzer (Grand Forks, ND) scored the lone goal for the Saints today, as he was also able to record double-digit faceoff victories.

Riley Girod (Calvet, SK, Canada) recorded a team-high three blocked shots in the loss.

Eino Rissanen (Sonvillier, Switzerland/Lycée Blaise-Cendrars) recorded 35 saves in the net tonight, while also recording a .972 save percentage.
