Milwaukee, WI. - The St. Scholastica Men's hockey team recorded a tie tonight in a battle across the border against the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Both teams scored a goal in the first and second periods, and after a strong defensive showing in the third and overtime periods, the Raiders were able to prevail in the shootout rounds.
How it Happened
The Raiders jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first period at 14:52 on a powerplay goal to give themselves the early advantage.
A little over a minute later, at the 15:25 point of the first period, the Saints responded with a goal of their own, as
Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, SK, Canada/St. Joseph HS) scored his first goal of the season with assists going to
Evan Pahos (Parker, CO) and
Sam Olson (Duluth, Minn/Cloquet HS), leveling the score at 1-1.
The Raiders were able to strike early once again in the second period at the 15:58 mark, breaking the 1-1 tie and giving themselves a 2-1 lead.
Eino Rissanen (Sonvillier, Switzerland/Lycée Blaise-Cendrars) made key saves for the Saints in the second period, as the sophomore goalie recorded five saves in the period to hold off the Raiders offense.
Late in the second period, the Saints would score the equalizing goal at 17:49, with
Hunter Hanson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) scoring for the first time this season on the powerplay with assists from Issac Suppin and
Brodie Girod (Clavet, SK, Canada/Clavet HS), as the game sat at 2-2 entering the second intermission.
The third period was marked by intense defensive play from both sides, with each team generating scoring opportunities but failing to find the back of the net. The Raiders had a few close calls and made key saves that helped to keep the game tied as the game sat at 2-2 heading into overtime.
As regulation time expired with the score knotted at 2-2, the game headed into overtime. Both teams fought valiantly during the extra period and neither team was able to score, forcing the game into a shootout.
In the shootout, Shewchuk put the Saints on the board first, scoring on his attempt. Rissanen made two saves on his first two attempts as the Saints held the momentum after two rounds in the shootout.
The third round brought more drama as the Saints could not convert their opportunity, while the Raiders broke through for the Raiders, evening the shootout score to 1-1. After a save from the Raiders, they were able to capitalize, scoring a goal on their next attempt and giving them a 2-1 lead. With both teams unable to score in the final rounds, the Raiders celebrated a well-earned shootout victory.

The Saints (0-0-1, 0-0-0) will be back in action tomorrow, November 2, to once again take on the Raiders of MSOE. The puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
