Duluth, MN. - The St. Scholastica Men's Soccer team hosted a weekday match today against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons. A goal-filled first half had fans on their feet, but the Falcons ran away with it in the second half and took the win 6-4.
How it Happened
1st Half
The opening 20 minutes of play were unlike any other game this season. The score was 3-3 just 18 minutes in, both teams exchanging goal for goal.
The first goal of the game from Saints forward Lanji Atanga (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), a deep lob pass from David Lopez (Jalisco, Mexico/Universidad de Guadalajara) set the team up for an early lead at 2:44.
10 minutes of scoreless play had the crowd expecting a different chain of events. But the Falcons tied it up 1-1 at 13:55.
Again, at 14:47, the Falcons took their first lead of the game, 2-1.
It wouldn't take long for the Saints to bite back, scoring another at 15:03. Gabriel Marchesoni (Surrey, BC, CA) made a roughly 50-yard dash for the offensive end, he tied it up with the help of Fabian Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Intisana). The score was tied 2-2.
Just 55 seconds later, the Saints took the lead one again, with another goal from Marchesoni at 15:58. Marchesoni was able to capitalize on a rebound in the 18-yard box.
At 19:32, the Falcons returned the favor with another goal.
The remaining 25 minutes of play consisted of a lot of back and forth at center field. The Falcons had a few shot attempts, but were unsuccessful. The first half ended 3-3.
2nd Half
After a very busy first half, both teams looked to take a comfortable lead. But 10 minutes into the half, the Falcons found the back of the net at 55:36 and led 4-3.
With lots of game left, the Saints were attempting shots from left and right. Marchesoni took a big chance at a hattrick, but missed just high.
At 62:59, the Falcons scored again.
Despite a lot of chippy play, the Saints held strong till 75:27 when the Falcons managed to tally their sixth of the game.
The Saints turned around and popped one in the back of the net to close the Falcon lead to two goals. Ted Barker (Huntingdon, England) scored his first of the season at 77:24.
The game ended in favor of the Falcons, 6-4.
