DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell this afternoon in a conference matchup against the Johnnies from St. John's at the Reif Gymnasium. The Saints trailed by nine at halftime, but a second half that saw St. John's shoot nearly 53 percent from the field propelled the Johnnie's to a 85-55 victory over St. Scholastica this afternoon.
How it Happened
Early on, the Saints were the aggressors on the offensive side of the ball, as Andre Crockett Jr. (Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS (Rochester Community College)) and Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) both got early jumpers to fall to give CSS an early lead.
Jumpers from Winesett and Jacquez Overstreet (Appleton, Wis./Oshkosh West (Marian University)) helped give the Saints a one-point lead over the Johnnie's in the early moments of the first half.
Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) got his afternoon started with a successful trip to the free throw line and a three-pointer, as the Saints held a 15-12 lead.
A three-pointer from Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) and a pair of layups from Winesett gave CSS a three-point lead over St. John's, as both teams were going back-and-forth.
Thomson's second three-pointer of the half tied the game at 25-25, and after the Johnnies went on a 14-2 run, Crockett Jr. and Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) got jumpers to fall before the end of the half, as the Johnnies took a 42-33 lead into halftime.
St. John's opened the second half on an 8-0 run before Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) converted an and-one, as the score sat at 50-36 in favor of St. John's.
Later in the half, Winesett and Raymond both hit layups for CSS, but the deficit still remained in double-digits.
St. John's went on a 17-0 run until the Saints next field goal, which came when Keykal got a layup to fall with around nine minutes to play.
Keykal would score just moments later with a nice looking jumpshot, followed up with a layup from Raymond a minute later.
The Saints were rewarded with a pair of three-pointers on the next two possessions, coming from Overstreet and Ethan Russell (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS), as the score sat at 79-52.
The Saints would get its last field goal of the game minutes later, when Owen Larsen (Chisago City, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) hit a three-pointer, coming on an assist from Ben Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy). The Johnnie's would score a three-pointer of its own on the next possession, as the final score came out with the Johnnie's taking today's game by a score of 85-55.
