ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell tonight in a road matchup against the Pipers from Hamline University. Hamline took a 13-point lead into the half, and despite the Saints outscoring the Pipers in the second half, the Saints fell just short with the Pipers winning tonight's game by a score of 77-68.
How it Happened
The Pipers began the game on a 9-1 run before Andre Crockett Jr. (Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS (Rochester Community College)) hit the first field goal of the night for the Saints with a three-pointer.
On the Saints' next possession, Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) scored his first points of the night on a layup, making the score 12-6 in favor of the Pipers.
Later in the half, Keykal converted an and-one for the Saints, but the Pipers still held an 18-9 lead over CSS.
Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) scored the next five points for St. Scholastica, hitting a layup and a three-pointer, as the Saints still trailed by eight points.
The Saints got its next three baskets in the paint, as Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) got a jumper and a layup to fall, followed by a layup from Jacquez Overstreet (Appleton, Wis./Oshkosh West (Marian University)), making the score 27-20.
Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored the last field goal of the first half for the Saints, as the Pipers took a 38-25 lead into halftime.
The Saints offense came out firing, as Crockett Jr. got an early layup to fall, followed by a Winesett three-pointer, as the Saints tried to cut into the Pipers lead.
After layups from Keykal and Thomson, Overstreet would hit a shot from beyond-the-arc, but the Pipers lead was now at 55-39.
Overstreet would hit another jumper on the ensuing possession and another three-pointer moments later. Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) followed him up and was able to go two for two at the free throw line after the senior guard forced a turnover with a steal.
The Saints were helped with a pair of three-point plays, first with Overstreet converting an and-one, and then Moore got a three-pointer to fall, as the Pipers still led 62-52.
Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) scored a nice layup for the Saints with a little under six minutes to play to get the Saints deficit under double-digits.
A pair of Thomson layups and a three-pointer from Thomas gave CSS momentum, as the Pipers lead was trimmed to 69-62.
Although the Saints were helped with three-pointers from Crockett Jr. and Thomson, the Pipers were able to close the deal on tonight's game, defeating CSS by a score of 77-68.

The Saints (2-11, 1-7) will be back in action on Saturday, where they will host the Cobbers from Concordia-Moorhead at the Reif Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
