DULUTH, Minn. – In a packed gym for alumni day at the Reif Gymnasium, the St. Scholastica men's basketball team took on the Knights from Carleton in a MIAC matchup. The Knights built a lead at the end of the first half, taking a 10-point lead into the half, and although the Saints went head-to-head with the Knights in the second half, Carleton was able to come away with a 77-63 victory this afternoon.
How it Happened
The Saints got its afternoon started with layups from Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) and Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), as the Knights jumped out to an early 10-4 lead.
Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) got his afternoon started with a three-pointer and a layup, and it was his layup, following baskets from Luke Raymond (Hudson, Wis./Concordia Academy (UW-River Falls)) and Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS), that gave CSS a 14-12 lead.
After the Knights reclaimed the lead and expanded it to five points, the Saints got right back in it with help from three-pointers by Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) and Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS), and a layup from Matho Ojullu (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS (Dakota County Technical College)).
CSS was able to hang right with the Knights entering the late minutes of the first half, as Nelson and Winesett each got layups to fall, with Carleton holding a 36-30 lead.
Carleton was able to add a few more points to its total before the end of the half, as the score sat at 42-32 as the game hit halftime.
Opening up the second half for CSS was a beautiful fadeaway jumper from Raymond that put an end to a Knights early run to begin the second half.
Minutes later, the Saints got help with three-pointers from Thomas and Winesett, as well as a jumper from Andre Crockett Jr. (Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS (Rochester Community College)), but the Knights still held a 14-point advantage.
Moe Washington (Silver Spring, Md./Hibbing Community College) and Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) would get their afternoons started, as the pair each hit three-pointers, making the score 66-51.
Moments later, Crockett Jr. would be able to hit an open shot from beyond-the-arc, which would be followed up with a layup from Nelson, as the Saints still trailed 72-58.
In the closing minutes of the second half, the Saints got a boost when Ethan Russell (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) scored on a floater, but it would be the Saints' final points, as the Knights came away with a 77-63 victory over CSS.
