Men’s Basketball Unable to Hold Off Red-Hot Gusties

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team faced the Gusties from Gustavus tonight at the Reif Gymnasium in a home contest. The Gusties were able to take a seven-point lead into the half, and even though the Saints were able to cut it close in the second half, the Gusties came away winners by a score of 76-68. 

How it Happened
After the Gusties jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, the Saints got its night started when Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) would score the first five points for CSS, trailing 6-5. 

Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) took his turn scoring five points, scoring on a layup and three-pointer, as the Gusties still held a 15-10 lead. 

The Saints would get its next two field goals on layups, when Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) and Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) each got their nights started. 

St. Scholastica would be able to bring its deficit to just two points after Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) scored on a layup and two jumpers, one being from three-point range, as the Saints trailed 23-21.

Later in the half, baskets from Jacquez Overstreet (Appleton, Wis./Oshkosh West (Marian University)) and Andre Crockett Jr. (Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS (Rochester Community College)) brought the Gusties lead back down to five points. 

Gustavus was able to score the last field goal of the half, taking a 34-27 lead over CSS into the halftime break. 

The Saints got a quick basket to open the half, when Winesett hit a three-pointer to bring the lead back down to five for Gustavus. 

Three-pointers from Overstreet and Thomas would bring the Saints' deficit back down to single-digits after a brief Gustavus run, as the Saints trailed 47-41. 

Minutes later, Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) scored on back-to-back possessions, followed up with a layup from Thomson, to make the score 53-48 in favor of the Gusties. 

Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) would score for the Saints just a few possessions later, hitting a clutch three-pointer that put CSS within striking distance. 

Despite layups from Winesett, Overstreet, and Thomas, the Gusties were able to expand its lead to 16. 

In the late minutes, the Saints got some momentum, with Winesett and Thomson delivering layups and Winesett also hitting a three-pointer, but the Gusties were able to hold on for a 76-68 victory this evening.

The Saints (2-17, 1-12) will be back in action on Saturday, where they will hit the road to take on St. John's. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
