How it Happened
Just a little over three minutes into the opening period, the Saints struck the first goal of the night, coming from the stick of Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS), with assists going to Kieran Chung (Nottingham, England/) and Danylo Sukhonos (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Brovary Professional Lyceum), to give CSS a 1-0 lead over the Pipers.
After momentum-stopping penalties handed to the Saints, Hamline scored twice before the period was over, both of which came on the power play, to take a 2-1 lead over St. Scholastica after the first intermission.
After Bostedt made a pair of saves to open the second period, the Saints went on the power play after a Hamline penalty. The power play turned to be crucial, as Brodie Girod (Clavet, Saskatchewan/Clavet HS) broke through and found the back of the net, with assists going to Bryce Johnson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) and Tristan Shewchuk (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada/St. Joseph HS), as the game now sat at a 2-2 tie.
Just minutes later, St. Scholastica reclaimed its lead when Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) scored his sixth goal of the season as Shewchuk and Isaac Suppin (Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada/George Elliot Secondary) each picked up assists, giving CSS a 3-2 lead midway through the second period.
After a two-minute span of four-on-four hockey that resulted in no goals scored, the Saints were able to score its third goal of the period on the power play. Scoring for the Saints would be Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS), as Richels and Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya) would be awarded assists, to give CSS a 4-2 lead heading into the final period.
The Pipers came out firing to open the third period with multiple opportunities to score, but Bostedt showed up in key situations for the Saints to keep the score at 4-2.
Hamline would break through in the back end of the period, as the Pipers still faced a one-goal deficit.
