DULUTH, Minn. – In its second time playing the Pipers from Hamline in as many days, the St. Scholastica men's hockey team was able to complete the series sweep tonight, as the Saints got out to a 3-1 lead, but the Pipers fought all the way back, and it was the Saints who scored early in overtime to take the 4-3 victory tonight.
How it Happened
When the Pipers came out firing in the first period, Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS) was able to be the brick wall for the Saints, stopping all shots he faced in the period, keeping the score at 0-0 for the time being.
Later in the period, the Saints cracked through to score the first goal of the game, coming off the stick of Bryce Johnson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS), with assists going to Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS) and Nick Lanigan (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
The Saints defense showed up in a big way near the end of the period, as Carsen Richels (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS) and Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) both recorded blocked shots, keeping the score at 1-0 at the end of one period.
In the opening minutes of the second period, the Saints were able to extend its lead when Adrian scored his eighth goal of the season on the power play, assisted by Johnson and Shewchuk, as CSS now led 2-0.
Jumping later in the period, the Pipers were able to find the back of the net for the first time of the night to cut its deficit in half.
Less than a minute later, the Saints would respond with a goal of its own, this time coming courtesy of Shewchuk, with assists going to Adrian and Danylo Sukhonos (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Brovary Professional Lyceum), as the Saints now held a 3-1 lead.
In an eventful end to the period, the Pipers scored just a minute and a half later, as the Saints would still hold a 3-2 lead heading into the final period.
Just five minutes into the third period, the Pipers were able to crack through and tie the game at 3-3.
Both teams went back-and-forth trading opportunities to find the breakthrough goal, but at the end of the third period, the game remained at 3-3 heading to overtime.
In the overtime period, it took less than a minute for the Saints to get the game-winning goal when Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya) perfectly set up Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya) for the one-timer and the game winner, with Kieran Chung (Nottingham, England/) also getting credit with an assist, as the Saints pulled away with a 4-3 victory tonight.
